Computer Build Spring 2011

Postby Huff Smurf » Mon Nov 01, 2010 12:10 pm

Morning All.

Present Spec
500Gb hard Disk
Dual Core Processor
Inbuilt PSU
BFG nVidia 8600 GT Graphics (256)

Thinking of doing my computer up in the Spring.
From the Above (Running Win XP 64 bit) thinking of first off re-doing the case, PSU and Graphics.... (Case is slowly falling apart)

If anyone has any idea's on a case then let me know. (POssible Dual SLi, hold 1 DVD drive, 2 Hard drives, and hopefully have some heat sensor spaces with good venting)
Graphics cards I'll go for the best but 1 or 2 at the time. (Good quality for at least 2-3 years at a decent price)
PSU - hopefully wanting to go for a modular one.

Right, starting to get this underway, So far..

PSU: Corsair HX 1000W ATX2.2 (Modular and can support new Nvidea Sli cards.

Solid state HD: looks like a mine field, please offer brand advice on this one as to what you have a like, and what is future proof for any changes on the horizon. (Also on the note of case fittings, do they fit in a normal hard drive chassis)

Final build will be a Single Graphics Card (Nvidea 400 series of some sort (Beefy, but wanting to run more adobe stuff)

Processor and chip sets confuse me, but might as well grab an i7 chipset.... (Advise on single, dual, quad)

Ram: 4, 6 or 8?

Thanks

I'd say go with OCZ vortex 2 in either 2.5" or 3.5" size. 3.5" is standard hdd size where 2.5" is laptop size but comes with an adapter to fit in a normal drive bay but will offer better airflow due to being smaller. as for size i would get 120GB as minimum for your c drive and get a standard 1TB or 2TB drive to store everything else on.

well you can get a Nvidia gtx480 for around £350 or the very latest Nvidia gtx580 for about £420. The gtx580 is rumoured to be about 30% faster than the gtx480 but as the 580 has only just been released i can't confirm that.

ok, stick with an i7 but you need to pick what type of i7 as there are 2 types (lga 1156 and lga 1366) and will effect what socket motherboard you will need. from what i know the main difference is to do with pci express lanes and what speed they run at with the lga 1366 being the best but also costs more.
all i7 are quad core (newest model is actually 6 core) and they also have hyper threading which makes they show as 8 cores :)

if money isn't a problem then get 8GB otherwise 4 or 6 is fine but if you wanna do graphics or video editing the more the better.

hope that helps.

Cheers mate, exactly what I was looking for.

Think I can do it over 3 months. (£300 a month for a build)

Cases: Looking at Antec or Coolermaster ones. ((Slightly falling for teh Coolmaster HAF X gaming tower case) on the understanding that it will last 5-10 years of use and several builds of computer in it.) 2nd place is the Antec range and then the Coolermaster storm sniper. (Overclockers website)
Present case is a bit rubbish and has very little cooling options. (Hopefully with decent case cooling, I can just use stock heatsinks and fans and let the case keep things moving, until I upgrade the cooling later on)

Thanks a lot though, very very helpful.

Right.

Input needed please.(Case choice)

Do I go with this....http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/components/cases/cases/coolermaster/rc-942-kkn1.html
Coolermaster HAF X

or this.... http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/components/cases/cases/corsair/600t.html#sp3
Corsair 600T

Comments welcome.

most of the other parts are sorted and decided on. Just the PSU, but that sort of depends on final power requirements and amount of sockets needed.

Build as it stands - final build will happen in April/may.

Case: Corsair 600T (Small on the outside, loads of space inside and still high airflow. At purchase, still might get the HAF is its on bargain)
PSu - 1000 W of something - Modular.
Mobo. X67 series, coming out Q1 of 2011. Better overclock and USB 3 use than the P67 series Otherwise P67 Series if X is overpriced.
Processor - Sandy Bridge 1155 socket, 3.4 Ghz (HD2000 version, HD3000 is overkill if you have a dedicated GPU)- clocks to 4.8Ghz stable. (Will run at 4.4 - 4.5 though)
Proc cooling - Corsair H70 Hydro Cooling.
Ram - 2x 4Gb sticks. Corsair. highest Hz possible at time. (Allows for upgrade to 16 GIG at later point with 2 more sticks of 4Gb)
SSD - OCZ vortex 2 3.5. 120 GB
HD - 1TB Samsung spinpoint.
Graphics - Either the GTX 570 or GTX 580 depending on reviews/price once they've stabalised.
OS - Windows 7 (64 bit)

untraceable - comments welcome.
Aim - To be future proof for 2 years.....and some parts 4-5 years. (Case, and maybe other parts....)
